Igor Jesus scored twice as Nottingham Forest concluded the league phase of the European competition with a convincing triumph against Ferencvaros at the home stadium.

Forest had already secured a berth in the knockout round play-offs and entered this fixture with a slim possibility of making the league's elite, although they required several results to go their way.

That did not happen but this confident performance will give Forest fans confidence that their side can navigate the two-legged play-off to reach the last 16.

A Ferencvaros midfielder did hit the post with a header inside the first 10 minutes for the away team – coached by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was dominantly the home side from then on.

They opened the scoring in the early stages when a delivery from midfield was turned into his own net by the defender and doubled the lead four minutes later – the striker firing an effort in at the back post for his 10th goal of the season.

Jesus' 11th came early in the second half when he timed a run perfectly to break clear of the backline and then place a shot beyond the goalkeeper.

That goal killed off Ferencvaros' hopes of making a comeback and instead Forest scored again when the excellent McAtee scored from a penalty after a foul by the unfortunate Otvos inside the penalty area on the winger.

The Europa League qualifying round draw is scheduled on Friday, 30 January (midday UK time), where Forest could be drawn against either Fenerbahce or the Greek club.

"It's more than the result, there was that atmosphere about it. I want these guys to do well as a unit, the whole squad," said manager Sean Dyche.

"That was another stride forward, but it is a positive step."

Team Breakdown: Jesus Catches Eye as New Signing Watches On

Jesus has been a revelation for Forest in European competition this season with six of his eleven strikes scored in the Europa League.

His brace also means he has scored a trio of strikes in his previous two outings and the prospect of a challenge for his place in attack could be providing motivation.

Italian forward Lorenzo Lucca was last week brought in temporarily and he was observing this game from the stands.

That may well have been on the striker's mind as he was impressive against Ferencvaros, producing two excellent goals and generally being a constant threat to the opposition backline with his pace and runs.

Jesus was not alone in impressing, with James McAtee producing his finest display in a Nottingham Forest shirt since joining from Manchester City last summer, while the Swiss international also impressed.

Such positive showings will give the club some renewed optimism as they turn their attention to pulling further away from the Premier League relegation zone when they welcome Crystal Palace on the weekend.

"All you can ask for is a reaction," continued the manager.

"I've never questioned their work ethic or their loyalty or honesty. It is just go and show your ability.

"James was very good and Dan was super sharp. Jesus got another two and these are positive indicators."
