From The Last of Us Co-Director Comes a New Game That Looks Very Different But Expands Upon Core Principles.

The acclaimed co-director responsible for the iconic survival game is making his return into game development. His new project, called Coven of the Chicken Foot, marks the inaugural effort from his new team, Wildflower Interactive, and it expands the ideas of the legacy he helped create prioritizing reactive companion characters.

A Witch, A Creature, and A New Kind of Adventure

Shown for the first time at the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot functions as a character-puzzle-platformer. The game follows an elderly witch, a character who subverts conventional action-game archetypes. This central concept originated in an interest in re-examining standard narrative tropes.

"What if you didn’t have combat prowess? What if you were not built for battle? What if you're an elderly woman?" posed the creative lead. "The concept seemed really fascinating to explore what makes a hero. A hero is about overcoming obstacles, including traits like selflessness and unwavering will."

A Living, Learning Partner Inspired by Past Work

Even though the title looks different visually, its core innovation is a direct continuation the technology pioneered in The Last of Us. The entire project was inspired by one pivotal question: "Is it possible to design a companion character even more reactive and adaptive in response to the user?"

The mysterious beast in the game transcends typical AI behavior. The director likens it to a learning entity which observes and responds through a multi-phase process. Initially, it exhibits curiosity, which can cause silly antics. Next, it enters a playful state. Ultimately, it analyzes to understand grasping cause and effect.

  • For example: If the creature sees Gertie slot a puzzle piece, it learns the motion absent the context.
  • This leads it to attempt to collect nearby items to see where they go, copying the action.
  • True comprehension arrives when it stumbles upon solving an obstacle, creating a genuine learning moment.

Crafting Your Own Unique Story

This complex system aims to foster individualized narrative moments. The creative lead highlights that the game will be a slower-paced, exploration-driven experience rather than a linear, combat-centric story.

"Whenever I attempted rigid narrative turns within this framework, the dynamic felt wrong," the director noted. "The liveliness in this partnership stems from how each individual player will inevitably create unique moments and stories compared to my playthrough."

By prioritizing emergent, character-driven storytelling, the new title signifies simultaneously a refinement and a bold new direction from the creator's legendary previous titles. This adventure is currently being built for PC platforms.
