India's capital Wakes Up to Dangerous Haze Following Celebrations
On Tuesday morning citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with breathing extremely polluted air that registered in the "alarming" range.
Extremely High Air Quality Measurements
Several parts of Delhi recorded an AQI over 500, which equals ten times the healthy level recommended by the global health authority.
Particular areas, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of eighteen hundred, representing 15 to 20 times higher than safe standards.
Fireworks Restrictions and Current Developments
Since 2020, officials had maintained a total prohibition on the sale and use of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the dangerous smog that blankets the city as the cold season approaches.
Yet earlier this year, the recently formed city administration petitioned the highest court to request a easing of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – historically criticized by environmental experts as being only about 30% less polluting – as a balance between "tradition and environment".
Legal Verdict and Enforcement
Much to the frustration of public health and environmental activists, judges agreed to the appeal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during designated time windows throughout the festival.
During the celebrations, there was extensive flouting of the designated hours across the metropolis, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly type.
Numerous air quality sensors throughout Delhi showed contamination reaching highest levels around the night hours to extremely hazardous levels seen during the festival in at least three years.
Cross-Border Consequences
The widespread use of fireworks during the festival also sparked a dispute with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region pointing to deteriorating pollution levels in the city of Lahore on contaminants coming from neighboring India following the events.
Persistent Environmental Crisis
Extremely elevated concentrations of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have continued as a significant problem for over a decade and a half, with the situation showing no improvement.
During the festival period, the levels of dangerous particles in the air has been documented to shoot up to significantly exceeding the peak levels ever recorded in China's capital, which was formerly viewed as the planet's dirtiest urban center.
Various Contamination Contributors
This crisis in the city is caused by a mix of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and haze from agricultural fires in adjacent areas of Punjab and Haryana.
Within these states, rural residents illegally burn crop residue to clear them quickly, creating toxic smog that remains stagnant over the capital as colder air sets in.
Health and Economic Impact
Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million residents residing in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to multiple studies.
This pollution leads to elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can even lead to cancer.
The pollution is estimated to be responsible for ten thousand early mortalities per year in the capital.
