KPop Demon Hunters: Born from the Desire to Allow Female Characters Be Silly On-Screen
It would be a massive understatement to say that KPop Demon Hunters has captivated global audiences. Depending on who you ask for its immense success, including its infectious songs, a bustling fandom that creates its own choreography and covers, and a truly eye-watering amount of fanfiction.
From a female perspective, one of the most beloved aspects of KPop Demon Hunters is the bond between Huntr/x's members Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. Against all challenges, they unite to vanquish evil and restore the Honmoon. While there is an ill-fated romance between Rumi and Jinu from Saja Boys, it never overshadows the endearing connection among the three girls. They are loud, unapologetic and fearless to appear silly.
The Intentional Silliness of Huntr/x
According to the director and writer, the humorous nature of Huntr/x was a conscious choice. Speaking at a media event alongside the vocalists and fellow director/writer Chris Appelhans, Kang was asked about the key elements she wanted female viewers to see in the series.
"The most important is I wanted to see really silly women," Kang stated. "You know, we're so afraid, especially in animation, to show female characters be really silly and become the most humorous character."
She shared a personal anecdote from working on films where an ensemble cast included one girl character. Creators faced difficulties in extended discussions about how to make her unique. Kang suggested making the most comedic role female, but the idea was often dismissed.
Empowerment Through Humor
She confessed that this frustration over the unwillingness to portray silly women directly influenced the creation of KPop Demon Hunters. She was set to make all three Huntr/x members humorous.
"I firmly believe there's power and resilience in comedy," Kang said. "It takes a ton of courage. To propose gags. To act goofy around others. And when you discover friends that accept your quirks, and they are just as weird with you, that is an ideal bond. I was eager to showcase that type of female relationship."
This approach paid off: The series is filled with hilarious scenes, often conveyed through the animation style. Examples include the trio slurping noodles with exaggerated expressions and tumbling around when they see the attractive Saja Boys. These comedic elements make the characters memorable and are clearly a major factor why fans are deeply engaged and eagerly anticipating a follow-up project.
KPop Demon Hunters is available to watch on Netflix.
