Virginia's New Governor Makes a Landmark as First Female Governor

Throughout 250 years, Virginia has seen 74 governors, all of them men. Recently, Abigail Spanberger overcame this historic barrier by winning the election as the first female governor in Virginia's annals.

A Campaign Focused On Cost-of-Living Issues and Targeted Criticism

Ex- US congresswoman and Central Intelligence Agency operative won with a campaign that stressed everyday expenses and deliberately targeted the former president's agenda rather than the person.

Early Life and Academic Journey

Born in a New Jersey town on August 7, 1979, she relocated to a Richmond area at thirteen. Her father was an military serviceman who later worked in law enforcement; her mom was a nurse and volunteer.

She attended the Virginia's flagship university, earning a degree in literary arts. Post-graduation, she had a short stint as a educator before turning to a career in public service.

“I grew up understanding that I wanted to emulate my father and I did,” Spanberger shared with followers at a gathering in the city of Norfolk recently.

Government Roles

At the Postal Service, she handled involving drugs, child predators and financial criminals. She executed court mandates, often being the only woman on the arrest team. She then joined the Central Intelligence Agency and specialized in anti-terror efforts, working covertly and overseas.

Family Decision

In that year, she and her spouse, an technical professional, considered their future. Living on the west coast, they were considering another overseas assignment. They pulled out a globe and asked their eldest daughter, then in kindergarten, where they should go. Virginia, she replied, because “family and friends reside in Virginia”.

Spanberger stated at her rally: “And so we chose to pivot from a federal career, to service to community because she was correct. Everyone we love lives in Virginia.”

Political Beginnings

Back in Virginia, she participated in a grassroots group, which combats firearm incidents, and started a youth group. In 2017, she decided to campaign for the House, which people told her was a “crazy endeavour” because the party hadn't had won the seventh district in half a century.

“But I witnessed what Donald Trump was doing with his authority and how he was creating conflict. And I saw my representative over and over again work against the Affordable Care Act. And I realized I had to step up. So spoiler: I won.”

Centrist Approach

In the capital, she quickly became associated with the Blue Dog Coalition, a collection of moderate and budget-conscious lawmakers. She concentrated on less visible matters: expanding broadband to rural areas, fighting drug trafficking and veterans’ services.

She quickly established a reputation for working with opposing parties and was often cited as the most bipartisan member of the state's congressmembers. She was vocal about political rhetoric that she believed alienated centrists, cautioning her party against partisan language that could be used against them in tight races.

Political Alliance

Along with Congresswomen Elissa Slotkin and an ex-navy pilot, she was called a member of the “mod squad” in contrast to the left-leaning “group” of the New York representative.

Run for Governor

In late 2023, she declared she would not seek re-election for a another term and would instead run for governor in 2025.

Her campaign highlighted themes of public service, support for education and infrastructure and defense of democratic institutions. Her intelligence experience lent her authority on national security issues and she described government work as a calling instead of a career.

Election Victory

This enabled her to counter Republican opponent Winsome Earle-Sears’s attacks on social topics, notably the claim that she is an radical on individual freedoms and health care for transgender people.

Spanberger, who stated that individual districts should decide whether transgender students can compete in school athletics, cast her opponent as the candidate more misaligned with the center of the state's voters.
